Avlis policy on: Level Banking

Post by Moredo » Wed Jun 28, 2006 10:57 pm

I shouldn't really have to say this, but you're not supposed to *not* level up, when you have the XP to level up. The only time you can do this, if you know (read: You have written correspondence) that a DM is going to run a PrC quest for you, and you have to wait him to get time to run it.

UPDATE - The absolute maximum you are allowed to bank is 2 levels - 1XP. This will coded in very soon. You must still only do this is you are awaiting a PrC and this has been agreed with a DM, or a Master of the relevant Epic Class.

To clarify further.

Good:
Character levels up at the first chance he gets. This doesn't mean at once (the very second), but when you're in a safe place where you calmly level up.

Okay:
PC waiting on a PrC quest, and has had contact with a DM that has promised him to run it next week, gains a level and waits a week on the quest before leveling up.

Bad:
PC is waiting on a PrC but hasn't been promised anything and banks level in an effort to 'not ruin his build', because he wants it just so and so.

Very Bad:
PC finding a sweet spot he can camp and get max XP for the creatures he kills, gains a level, but doesn't want to lose his ideal level/CR XP-haven so he doesn't level up.

Spotting this in the database is very easy, so just don't do this.
Always consider alignment as a tool, not a straitjacket that restricts the character.

I have another question regarding this...there is a point in palemastery where someone gets a bone arm. That is often roleplayed out with other people where the old arm is cut off, and a bone arm is placed...Is it okay to hold off leveling for a short while until such a ritual takes place?

Please plan ahead, or slow down or XP gain as you get close to that level. Banking for this is not a good reason

If i understand right, even if you do not level up NWN still assumes your the higher level as far as gaining xp from spawns and etc. I remembering getting a level at what must have been some breaking point in Rockhome long ago and i got significantly less even though i didnt level up till we were clear of the area.

The default XP system does, indeed, account for it. However Avlis's custom XP code doesn't.

Clarification question here.

Is it in the "okay" category or the "bad" category to not level up even if you gain no more xp until you level up?

In other words, if you're waiting to level for some reason, can you log in if you gain no xp, or is that bad and should you still either not log in or immediately level up?

Thanks.

It's a clarification question, not an asking-for-an-exception question.

(And it no longer applies to me, as I just levelled anyway. The question still stands, though.)

We're not evil - if you want to do something like this (that's against the letter of the rule, but not the meaning) send a PM to a DM with your intentions and it'll be alright 99% of the time.
