Kurathene naming conventions.

Post by Nob » Sun Apr 17, 2005 10:26 pm

I don't think this had been posted anywhere, so I thought I might put this up for consumption.

It's a very rough set of guidelines save several notes about prefixes to last names so take it as a suggestion.

Last names have a particular pattern in patrician families.
A noble family from a specific region would have the region listed with "D'" something. Examples are: D'Medican(which corrupted became "da Medican"), D'Lairne, D'Barrke, D'Epillus, D'Trenaine, D'Braccien.

After 3 or 4 generations from the standard line, scions usually switched from D' to De to distinguish themselves from their more affluent/influential cousins.

The second distinction is someone elevated to Patrician status and given a Baronet(a form of chivalric reward) or a lifetime peerage. The family and descendents of said person would subsequently prefix their name with va'.
Examples: va'Raislin, va'Lucien, va'Harle, va'Lorien(corruption -> Valorian)

These are suggestions.
Common names
Male First names: Joral, Methran, Vergil, Duccius, Alemmanus, Julius, Willard, Warren, Davicus, Michael(alternately Michel), Lucius(Lucien), Salvian, Reinhart, Quinn

Female first names: Sophia, Lianna, Aedile, Lucille, Honoria, Claudia, Cecille, Sabine

Last names in general are either determined from the region of origin or are very similar to first names in the case of commoners.

When I read some of the team's background and history about Kuras...

The Kurathene Empire is sort of a combination of medieval fuedalism and Roman empire. Medieval keeps are prominent in building. Although palaces of both varieties may exist. Kuras is the capital city.
I started thinking Roman sounding names would work..so I started playing Rome- Total war again to give me some inspiration.

If you're looking for Roman names (for example), I'd point you to this handy page.

This lists names for patricians, but do some civilians receive additions to their family name for any special deeds, especially the gentry? Otherwise, how do the gentry identify themselves from the rest of the rabble? You mentioned family descended from members of the Republican Guard, what type of name would they have?

Also, not all civilians are patricians, correct? So then some last names do not necessarily need prefixes at all, correct?

Also, I haven't been able to find a lot of info on the Patrician status... is there an actual land reward, or is it simply a change in name only? Could such status be lost, later?

See the "culture and society" section for details.
