Scripting References?

Post by Antius » Sat Jan 02, 2016 8:03 pm

So.. I checked to see if the Bioware forums were still around, but it looks like most of the info there has been lost to the ether!

Could anyone point me toward a good resource for general scripting, or for Avlis-specific stuff? I want to see if I can get something set up, but I've never done any work in the toolset. Any help would be appreciated!

I use this a lot, but you need to already know some basics for this to help you:

That site is the one I use a bunch. Do a search for Grimlar and also one for Celowin. There are lots of examples that you can look at in all of the different parts of Celowin's scripting help.

Here are some sites that I have bookmarked. Not sure what all of them have. Might be nothing of any interest, but going to post so you can look just in case. ;)

The new Bioware forum is good, and the Lexicon (both already linked above). The lexicon has several of those tutorials by Grimlar and Celowin.

NWN-Omnibus is an archive of much of the old Bioware forum, though not the easiest to use.
*Edits* Looks like it has a lot more in it now, including things like the lexicon. I still prefer the .chm/wiki versions of the lexicon, and .pdf stuff is easier to read/search for others, but at least it is all together.

NWN-University has all sorts of stuff. I haven't checked a lot of it, but it seems pretty decent (omnibus also in the related projects at the bottom, with others to look at).

*Edits* You can also check our own Scripting Forum (where this was posted) and ask anything. A lot of Avlis specific stuff can't be shared, but less specific stuff is no problem. You can always join QA (and eventually CCC) and get access to more *Hint, hint*

*Edit 2* If by "get something set up" you mean running a local persistent world for NWN for whatever reason, then you'll need to look at NWNX2 (NWNX4 is for NWN2) (I suggest using MySQL for the database, and the Linux version + server, if possible, even with a virtual machine on Windows/Mac). That takes some know-how, so don't jump into that unless you are sure you want to bother. If you just want to experiment, go for it. The forum there is still active, but most of the website documentation is out of date, at least as far as all the plugins, and they are pretty important. Check the forum for newer stuff.
