Runtime Error

Post by Deider » Fri Oct 02, 2020 8:58 pm

Last night I ran an event in the Fallen Crypt in M'Chek and everybody crashed out at least once in the temple area. (Ghostie bug reported it here.)

I was just curious if anyone else has seen this before in that area or others and if anyone has any idea what causes this.

Like a year ago during an event in a secret area? Crashes like that are maybe a once a year thing for me caused by an unholy alignment of circumstances and so rare that I can't say what they are exactly besides there's a lot of things happening each time.

Thanks for the info. For us last night:
- there were only 5 of us in the area and no one else on the server
- we all crashed out at least once but some crashed more than others (I crashed out of the DM client 3 times, I think one player crashed out 4 times)
- the server never went down
- the crashes only occurred in that area but I have no idea if they were triggered by spawns or something else

I've had similar issues in other places, but it seemed to be linked to making NWN programming to run in administrator mode. Once I undid that all issues stopped. I'd suggest looking at your compatibility modes. Admittedly, it could be some other issue? But looks and sounds familiar.

That actually happens rather regularly for me with mobs that remove armor. I forget if it was some issue with customized clothing or the forcible removal of enchantments but I'm pretty sure we mostly crashed whenever Rade or Berry had their armor/clothes stripped during that event. It's the real danger of those gray oozes.

Huh! You know mentioning the armour removal triggering the crash makes sense - in the screenshot the shield was torn away - and indeed my armour was removed several times. I didn't always crash when it happened, only sometimes, but it's a good point. Damn oozes, I hate them even more now! heh

This might be the thing that keeps happening when I have my PC change helm. Unfortunately I rarely get more than a momentary look at the error message, but it's definitely happened inside and just outside the Fallen Crypt as well as in and around Shadowkeep.

Personally I blame Zhitaril.

Interesting... I wonder why I crashed out of the DM client? Or why sometimes everyone crashed out and other times only a few of us did?

I considered it, but it seemed localized to just her. Unlike described in the ticket, there weren't any runtime errors, she's the only one affected, etc. (other people with her lose clothing? no crash. I'm with her keeping mine on, no crash) Happens on different servers even. I just figure it was a hak/install/driver/etc. issue. Just like there's one spot in Mikona she crashes at 50% of the time without any error.

I can throw that in the comment of the tickets in case it's related either way.

Some of the circumstances I was talking about where I would crash and get the runtime error have been mentioned above. The oozes removing your armor. But also being too low a level to equip an item. Also, during item removal during death. My compatibility mode is now Windows 7 and I removed "Run this Program as Administrator" the problems went away. Like many others here, I just thought it was my computer and no one else was being affected. I'd still suggest you look at the compatibility modes of ALL the Neverwinter Nights EXE programs (not just the main exe file) in your Neverwinter Night folder if you're still having this problem. Good luck!

This came up again yesterday. I made some custom creatures ingame which used the bebilth armor-stripping attack and during combat with those creatures several PCs crashed out, as did I from the DM client.

However, the Lizardons I used in the Nelthrope plot use the same bebilith claws. I spawned some of them in to test and they didn't cause any crashes. The mystery continues...
