One of D&D's gameplay mechanics with spellcasting is that spellcasters have to select and prepare a selection of their spells in advance before they can use them. It usually takes a few hours (in game time).
How does NwN handle it?

I will get back to you on this one. I know that they have some weird method of doing it online, because obviously you can't decide to sleep for 8 hrs while everyone else is still doing stuff unless you want your character to actually be doing nothing for 8 hrs of in-game time. But I forget what the method is right now.
You can try to check out the boards over at http://www.neverwinternights.com. The answer is there, and in fact that's where I'm going to go find it.

I think I've read somewhere that the resting time is pretty much instant in order to avoid any time paradoxes when multiple parties play, i.e. two parties play simultaneously, one rests for 8 hrs, the other keeps going. The 8 hrs passes in an instant for the first party, but the second party hasn't rested and now their clock is 8 hrs behind.
