Spell saves

Post by Jeffi0 » Sun Jun 08, 2003 3:29 pm

What is the DC of saving throws for spells like Flame Arrow or Phantasmal Killer? It just says Reflex save or Fortitude save or Will save, but doesn't say what the DC of the save is...

It depends on the level of the caster. I don't have my player's handbook on me right now, but spells like that's DC goes up with level.

If someone could explain the DC of spellcasters and how it goes up by level spell id much appreciate it.

Ok, I made a lvl 11 sorc in SP and the DC for Negative Energy Ray was 15, for Phantasmal Killer and Enervation it was 18, and I forget what it was for Flame Arrow. This isn't really helpful though since not many people use any of the spells I just listed the DC for, but it's a general idea...

Spell DC on pen and paper, is base 10 + spell level + attribute mod + shool of speciality if applicapable.

There are also feats which can increase the DC.

So, I cleric/druid with wis 18 (+4) and casting a third lvl. spell . . .
10 + 3 + 4 = 17

So, it's not actually based on the caster's level then? Only the spell level. Ah, I see - thankyou.

The caster's level comes into affect when a character has Spell Resistance. Caster's have to "beat" the spell resistance a character has by rolling a D20 and adding their level.

SR = 12
Caster rolls a 10 and is fourth . . . .character is in trouble!

Anyone feel free to correct me if I am wrong! But I am confident this is how it works.

Yeah that's how it works. Think of SR as magic AC and the casters level as BAB.

I think Khudraal has it bang on. The spellcaster doesn't make a roll, it's more of a skill check on the defenders part vs DC of the Spell strength.
Let's just not go into counterspelling... *shudder*

Bad news, the save DC calculation is somehow screwed in NWN.

Implosion (lvl9) spell should create a DC of 29 (10+9+10 from boosted wis 30)
But the DC I see demanded ingame is 32.

Can anybody explain this discrepancy (not that I am complaining there)

Star, want to meet in game sometime, go somewhere off the beaten path, and figure out how DCs work? IC it could be justifiable as divine magical research. Something we both just happen to be interested in. Perhaps we could use equal keep as the meeting place, since I will be returning from the death plane occasionaly.

I didn't think spell focus was available to divine magic spell casters (e.g clerics and druids)

Is this the dc that your Character is producing when he/she casts an implosion, or is this the dc that your character must make against an implosion cast by an npc?

I believe that npc spell dc's can exceed 31, but I'm pretty sure pc spell dc's cap out at 31.
