Pre-Noob Questions: Half-Orcs and Monks

I have a few friends who have sparked an interest in NWN, and Avlis in particular. I haven't played many MMORPGs (mostly FPSs) but I was once quite the avid pen-and-paper RPGer. (AD&D 2nd Ed, Shadowrun, Marvel, etc.)

Anyway, I've been mulling over character choices, and have decided I want to make a Half-Orc Monk as my first character. I've looked around the site and forums, but haven't been able to find much info. Any suggestions for sources of info on either my chosen Race and/or Class? I'm looking for background and societal info on both so I can get a clear character concept and motiviation before I get in. Thanks for any help!

there is a really good section of the forum that has quite alot of world information - viewforum.php?f=98 apart from that you might try pm'ing a DM for advice.

The historians called it the worst mistake the Nashville army could have made. The losses were near 100%. The unwitting Nashville army was outnumbered 6 to 1.

Actually, this is a common misconception. More learned scholars have stated it this way: "The worst mistake the Nashville army could have made, was to travel to the barren wasteland that is Texas. Without trees, running water, or indoor bathrooms, the state did more to defy them than the combined might of the Texans. It was later lamented that some form of recreational vehicle could have changed the outcome of this historic event."

Unfortunately, due to the well established fact that Texans are notorious braggarts and mostly illiterate, the historical accounts as detailed by the Texas historians were erroneous.

The one accurate fact in the tale as spun by the Texans is that the ratio was indeed 6-to-1, as this was more than adequate for the Nashville forces to defeat the bumbling army of Texans.

kaiju8, sorry for the spammers, to try to answer your question, you can pretty much be any class/race combo (the beauty of 3rd Ed.) In avlis, the orcs had a terrible accident and now have an aversion to magic and wizardry, as for monk orders, the OotW is an NPC order that might be able to join? or at least hang out at, theres an order in the slums of mikona thats PC run, and i believe another order, of the dragon, is beginning. Those are all good sources of information about monks, but dont feel pressured into joining any of them, you can have plenty of fun being all alone.

Thanks for the info, Vroshgrak. I had seen the bit about Orc's aversion to magic, but the Monk order info will be useful. I'm not thinking about joining up, I don't think. My character concept is going to be a bit of a loner. But those contacts might be useful.

And no worries about the "spammers." The two originators work mere feet from me.
