I'm considering the improved initiative and maybe going for superior initiative later for one of my characters..
More because it sounds cool to be FAST, than I actually know what it means IG..
Is it a matter of who deals the first blow in the first round or what?
Can anybody help out Homers dumbass cousin here? I feel all yellow...
thanx

Initiative determines who gets to act first in a round...so yes, it determines who gets to strike first.

Okay..
Is there any point in taking it with one who has a very high dex on beforehand then?
I've no idea of how many increments (?) A round consists of.. And if that means anything if you got say +12 in initiative, would it be folly to use a feat on that skill..?
I dunno even if its visible ingame that the character is VERY FAST

I bet not...

if you have a higher initiative roll than someone you will get the your first attack of a round before they do, which if you have 4 or more attacks per round can be quite destructive because of the way NWN will do them in flurries

It would be visible IG that you would be striking first. Theoretically, it's only really useful up to +20.

also it seems like as rogue you get your sneak atacks if you win.

You do, as you are flatfooted until you have engaged in the combat, which you do on your initiative in the first round...

Winning the initiative roll as a mage can be super important!

It's DEX based 'skill' if I'm not mistaken, so you should have some dexterity if you want to excel at it.

Your plusses will be vs. their plusses to initiative, so if you really want to be winning it, hard to say when you have enough since your enemy could have some high bonuses too. If you have a first attack that really gives a big advantage, like knockdown or stunning fist or something, then it's really nice to be able to get initiative. For characters like barbarians and monks it's even nicer since you can have a chance to get right up to attack your opponent from farther away, in that first round.
Personally though I don't usually take those feats unless maybe you're a fighter with feats coming out of everywhere, there's a lot of feats that can give an even better advantage IMO.
