At first I thought I had some funky connection trouble, but it's much more than that I think.

PROBLEM.

1) Upon fronting the menu in NWN the whole thing is running extremely slowly, like highlighting of menu options, selection of menu option, etc. This carries on into character selection as well. All this is evident in both off and online modules.

2) After selecting a module to load/join. The whole module takes friggen ages to load up, either offline or online modules. It took the 'start tent' at least 15 seconds to load for instance.

3) After the module area has loaded, my Frame rate is nigh on stopped, all I read is '1'. The textures are very grainy and the general resolution looks like crap. Moving suffers a huge amount of latency. Selecting a quikslot suffers a huge amount of latency. I'm talking 3-4 seconds here. This occurs both offline and online.

4) Typing also suffers latency of that some sort of time. 3-4 seconds before what I type appears in my dialogue line.



WHAT I'VE TRIED

The old defrag the hard drive. I only have a small drive (40G) so it gets fragged a fair bit. This didn't have any noticeable effect.

So I'm guessing that NWN has corrupted somehow, and I'll have to re-install the whole sucker again. Unless someone has a better idea to try first.

Yesterday it was all good and dandy. Today it's all fucked up. The only thing I've done between here and there is switch my machine off/on once, and downloaded about 50M of pictures from my Digi-cam.

Fucked if I know. Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Do you have any processes running, that you don't recognise?

If not, then I'm all out of ideas.

Except that I've had a similar problem on my laptop, but in my case the game ran smoothly for 1-2 minutes before the fan powered down and everything started acting up. I later figured out it was the newly installed SP 2 that fucked up with the power controll to the CPU, so the thing started running at half engine.

Only background tasks, NWN is consuming 90-98% of the CPU runtime. The memory usage seems normal.

The whole thing is just 'dragging it's feet'.

Not sure if this is a recent thing or not, but when you logged onto Wilderness earlier it as a whole was lagging pretty badly.

Doubt it is related, but was lagging before and after you logged.

Try installing the newest drives for your video card. I had the same problem with a computer I tried installing NWN on and it was fixed as soon as I installed the new drivers.

In my case that happens with the damn Norton antivirus scan....the automatic one....

Sounds like rogue CPU usage. Even something stealing, say, 5% can severely impact game performance. For me, it's usually an evil ad in a Firefox tab, but you probably don't have that running. *shrugs* My two cents.

Also, I've noted the textures have taken a big hit. It's like NWN is trying to run without using the graphics card.

I had pretty much the same problem when something on my video card went wrong, i've replaced the card and everything went back to normal.

Looks like a chipset or something went bad on it.

If you could put your hand on a spare one, it worth to try it out.

i had an old 64 mo ram video card spared and the game works fine on it now.
waiting to replace my 256mo one now to get all the texture back to full extent *sigh*

It's not the Vid card, all my other games play as normal.

Strange. Maybe try running the Configure utility from the NWN startup menu (or \nwn\nwconfig.exe).

Check that you are not running in compatibility mode, let it do a scan, and see what happens.

It keeps wanting to revert to 800*600 60hz when it scans. I typically run 1024*768 75hz.

Re-installed the same driver (Nvidia 77.30) and all is well. For some reason it didn't want to work with NWN before.

most strange. usually that will happen if something corrupts your drivers.

have you installed any new hardware or software on your computer lately?

I had removed a large game file (4.5G).

Reminds of my tech support days.

That program was removed 5 days prior to the problem showing up. I'm not that much a simpleton thanks muchly.

I suspect WindowsUpdate did something "helpful" to your video driver, which you fixed when you reverted to the nVidia released one.

The fact that it happened after a reboot is what makes me suspicious... the other thing would be rogue power issues inside the PC causing the video card not to draw enough power, and making Windows think it was like a laptop running on battery.

I lock out the auto-updater, so that wasn't it. The vid-card had plenty of power because I could run all my other games no problem.

All your fans are running? Some system turn down there processesing speed. To protect the system against overheating by failer of one off them.

You still have all your Ram? could be your system needs to swap more because of failer of one of the memory banks.

you said you donwloaded some pictures to your harddrive so how full is it now ? could be it's full and there is to enough room for the swapfile.

I have ste up my system anew after fixing some comp troubles, and now I have problems 1,2 and 4 of the OP. I haven't added any new hardware or the like.

As an addition to problem 1, whenever I try to highlight an option or the like, that red smoke like background thingie stops moving. I checked the system capacity, and it drops to 0 for a brief moment, so basicaly the whole friggin system is on hold when that happens.

So far I tried a reinstall,an older GC driver that worked before and the obvious disc defragmentation. I have a dual core with the dual core optimizer installed and the nwnplayer.ini set accordingly.

Any ideas?

First, try running nwconfig, found in the NWN main folder, and see if that resolves your problems. If not proceed.
In the file nwnplayer.ini, also found in the NWN main folder, make sure there's a line "Client CPU Affinity=0" (or 1, 2..., just not -1) near the top. If not, add it.

If you've verified that but it still don't work properly, answer the following question, if able:
I assume you have a multi-core CPU. Is it an AMD or Intel?
The graphics card, is it Nvidia?
