couple of quick questions ... i havent been playing fair if you cant do these two things, and I'll stop now i know.

I thought it was ok to write a PM IC'ly and pretend it was a delivered note. Along the lines of ....

(subject heading)

~ a letter arrives at Dru'Els rest, addressed to Cha'reth ~

(text)

Dear Cha'reth ... (write IC message)

yours,

(signed, PC name)

this is using PM's to pass in game info though and I wont again, unless discussion here leads me to think otherwise.



Other question is about certain well-known characters of Avlis. My character might not have met a certain character, but I thought it was ok, if I have a had a description off other characters to recognize or semi-recognize them. Happened today.

my PC meets a stranger ... its someone he's heard of and had a description of, he says to the stranger, 'are you such and such, you appear to meet a description I have been given...'. The PC mine spoke to seemed to roleplay it out ok with me, it didnt 'feel' wrong like that.

Indeed, for any military type characters, seems imperitive that they would have descriptions of high-ranking officers etc. of the opposing side. I couldn't see how they might know for sure until close up enough to see their faces properly, nonetheless seems to me it would be their business to know such descriptions.

Again, however, I wont do this again unless any discussion here directs me otherwise.

I see nothing wrong with sending IC PMs as a means of having characters contact each other. Without the ability to do so, our advertisement boards would be completely useless, and it would be far more difficult to organise guilds and interact with DM-run characters.

Just like the Tell channel, I think it is between the two people in question to decide how to use PMs. If you want to keep them OOC, fine. If you want to converse IC, what's the harm?

Just remember to STATE CLEARLY when you are using them IC, Tells AFAIK are inherently OOC due to the lack of Psionic rules for NWN...

Be really bloody careful about the whole description thing. There's been so many posts about recognizing people it's not even funny. Unless the person is wearing some sort of rather distinctive armor and helm, or has fairly unique weapons dripping fire, etc....that's a real can of worms.

Plus, I can say "Human, 5'10 brown hair, sort of bushy eyebrows, sharp nose, handsome looking." Now, I'm sure that I just descriped at least several members of the Avlis community in RL, and I guarantee that even if you were given their names, you'd be hard pressed to match name to person.

A bit more of a case can be made for certain members of the opposing military side, assuming you're actually a member of the army (as in you signed up and are now going to be attacked by members of the opposing army). Even this however is a touchy issue.

Then there's the whole bit about having a description of a character, you meet him, OOC you know his name, IC you ask and he lies....and your character is suspicous of him. I've seen so many people pull that crap it's not even funny. "Oh, well my character would be naturally suspicous of him". I don't buy it in many situations. In fact more often than not, the reason your character is "suspicous" of him is because YOU the player are trying to figure out a way to prove that he's lying, and then carry through with whatever action you want.
