Character classes

Is there a list of what classes a player can be?

For example: Can you be a multiclassed Barbarian/Cleric (Like a barbarian shaman)?

I like to play barbarians in the old D&D rules, but I also like being able to cast a few spells and having a god to worship.

Thanks.

You can be ANY class or combination there of (up to three), you just have to meet all the requirements for each class. ie. Chaotic for a Barb (I think. Never played a barb) and you have to choose your deity for your cleric side (during char creation would be recommended) and meet the alignment for that deity as per Avlis rules.

Other than that, all RP imo.

Game on!! 8)

Certain combinations are considered cheesy (although not ilegal they are frowned upon by DMs and other players). A classic example of this is the Paladin/Sorcerer when only 1 level of Paladin is taken just to get all the entry feats and abilties. The reason this is bad, is because when the player had no intention of being a Paladin, they just wanted soom cool abilities for free. Stay away from this and you'll be fine.

You can be any class and, later on, any prestige class provided to meet the requirements. You can view those when you are choosing your next class in the level up screen.

A barbarian/cleric would be a fine combination, in my mind. Or barbarian/druid. Certainly fits the image of what a shaman is- a less civilized magic user.

also, you can follow a god vocally and publicly without actually having any divine magics. for example- my character is a member of the Order of Valok but only has levels in sorceror.

if you can rationalize a character concept that sounds fun to you and assuming it isn't overly cheesy (like dirk's suggestion above about the paladin/sorc- most of these are painfully obvious so i wouldn't worry about it overly much) you should follow up on your idea. And you can always post in the boards for any specific information like "who should my barbarian/cleric elf who lives in mchek follow for diety" and people will chime in with ideas.

Thanks for the replies. I have been playing for a little over a week, but have learned a lot and would now like to write up a background on a character and start over. I hate to lose all of my XP, but worse than that, I hate to lose the knowledge of all of the people that I have met.

I will probably do it anyway, to have a character that is more personal to me.

Thanks again.

There's nothing in the rules that forbids playing more than one character at a time, but some find it too difficult to manage. Do keep them seperate in every respect if you do.

Other than that, no problems whatsoever with a barb/cleric.

Game on!

Baal is a goblin barbarian/cleric of Maleki.

This works out just fine.

Yeah, and a lot of players do not speak English as a primary language, or are not that adept at picking up on flat, text-based sarcasm.

Someone could read both of these comments and actually think you're serious, so try to keep the jackass commentary at a minimum in serious threads. The fact that I, of all people, have to tell others to not make smartass comments is a sign of how serious a problem this could be. :P

I like the idea of the barbarian/druid. A very outdoorsy combination. I do have a question about that. If I start of with a barabarian, and am using a sword, can I still use the sword when I choose a druid? Do you get the best of both worlds there or do I have to stick with the weapons that a Druid can use.
Thanks.

Technically you can use the "super-set" of Druid + Barbarian, so if Barb class gives you access to Martial Weapons, then you can use those whatever other classes you have.

However, "ethically" your druid may have some reservations on this based on personal beliefs. There are other threads around about druids and weapons, take a look at those.

I don't think most people would mind if you used a sword though, people aren't too bothered about those kind of things these days. I even saw a wizard with a sword the other day

;)

Nothing wrong with mages using swords (or scythes), but there may be something wrong with druids doing so. I'd suggest finding previous threads about the issue. IIRC, druids are supposed to stick to druidic weapons, even if, from other classes or race, they have the ability to use non-druid weapons. But, this is the sort of rule that can't really be enforced.

Ah, heck, here are a few threads:

Actually, a battlemages competition is well overdue...

Two comments on this thread...

1) I think a Barbarian/Druid could be an exceptional character. I almost went for one myself, but changed my mind since I play Druids a lot and wanted to try something different. Imagine a Druid of Verossa who goes apesh*t (i.e. Barbarian rage) any time he/she sees someone abusing nature!

2) Don't worry too much about starting a new character. You'll meet plenty of people right away again. I just started a new character who's been on for three days now, and I think he has more friends than my older 9th level character!

For those who insist on taking that tempting "one-level" approach to gaining cool feats, I have only this to say...

Multiclass XP penalty
:P

Of course, you may think 20% isn't that big a deal. In that case, cheese on.

Which is why you will notice that the new Shifter Form replacements have clubs and scimitars as weapons.
