Please help a total newbie

Post by szabot » Sat Jun 19, 2004 4:55 am

Greetings everyone.

I'm new to both online RPG's (but not PnP) and to Avlis in particular. I've read a lot about Avlis already, but have a lot of questions that I think should get answered before I really get started. I've searched the (enormous and incredibly hard to navigate) forums for answers to some of my questions, but I simply can't find everything that I need. So, I hope some of you can kindly help me. The following questions are in no particular order.

First, I want to play a custom race character, namely a half-nymph. I followed the instructions, but when I logged onto the Le'Or T'Nanshi server, my character was dominated, a message said I was on the wrong server, and I was booted. Needless to say, I couldn't talk to the red golem to complete my transformation to a half-nymph. What happened?

Second, it appears as if Forian cannot have druids. But then what deity should I pick if I want to play a CN druid? Or can I not do that?

Third, when IC, how do I talk to other PC's?

Fourth, I want to eventually be a shifter. Is that too off for a half-nymph? Also, are there any Avlis-special rules that I should know for picking that prestige class?

Fifth, what is the appearance of a half-nymph? Elf-like, it seems, but what about skin and hair color?

Sixth, must I give my character a name when I make her? (Suppose I don't want other players to see my character's name floating above her head.)

Lastly, is there some person (such as some DM) that I should generally contact for these kinds of questions? If so, how do I do that?

That's all I can think of...for now!

Thanks in advance for any help.

cant help with all of it but

2nd ... I'm sure you cant no, only the Gods that make druids can make druids, and none of them are CN. Also, a druid's alignment has to be same as their God, like a cleric's.

3rd ... not sure what you mean (type in the IC comment, press enter?)

6th ... there is a whole load of stuff on floaty names, and now methinks you're not trying that hard with your searching. Very few players have gone ahead and made a character with no floaty, but its not unheard of.

good luck and welcome!

Thanks for helping, diddeecoy.

So, for talking to a PC, I just type in what I want to say and press enter? Then the words form above my head, right? I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't shouting, because that's something we're not supposed to do, right? (How would one shout, anyway?)

I actually didn't search for info about floaty names. The question only occured to me while I was typing the others. But, in any case, I've found it really difficult to search the forums here. There are just SO many different forums and posts. I've spent many hours already (in addition to spending a couple of days reading other things on the website for Avlis).

Looking forward to starting. Hope I can get some more help. Thanks.

yeh there is 'alot' of stuff... overwhelming at first, but it is there, and the DMs have loads to do, so if you can find it there its much better. Give us a few minutes and I'll find you some good ones on druids.

First: we have code to prevent people from server-hopping. What happens is, we keep track of which server your character was last on when they logged off. If you log onto a different server, and if less than an hour has passed, then you will be dominated and booted off the server. This is to prevent people from logging off one server and logging directly onto another, bypassing the hundreds or thousands of miles in between. So... if you log onto the server you were last on, OR if you wait an hour or more, that won't happen.

Second: Forian does not have druids. However, Dagath does, and Dagath is the only deity in Avlis with no alignment restrictions on his clerics and druids. Thus a druid of Dagath can be CN. You can learn more about Dagath on our forums.

Third: I think you have this one covered now. ;)

Fourth: Nah, half-nymphs can be shifters, there are no issues there.

Fifth: Half-nymphs look halfway between elves and nymphs, I believe. This means generally fair skin and hair.

Sixth: You can make a character with no name, BUT if you create more than one such, you'll end up with bizarre problems. Don't try it. :D

Lastly: This forum exists for exactly this kind of thing. If you have general questions about playing in Avlis, ask here. If your questions are in-character, ask on the Tavern forums (which are all IC). If you have more serious questions, concerns, or complaints, you can contact the staff at staff@avlis.org. If you have specific questions about a storyline, you should try to contact the pertinent DM. Likewise, if you have questions or comments about one of our servers, you can find feedback threads in the General Discussion forums, or you can track down the Module Coordinator for the module in question and ask them.

Welcome to Avlis!

To convey shouting players usually use capitols...

Thanks again to diddeecoy and thanks to Aloro. Your information and links have been helpful.

I have another question, this one about portraits. I don't seem to have any new portrait options after downloading - and extracting into my hak folder - the CEP and Avlis haks. I was under the impression that there would be other portraits. Is there something I need to do myself?

Thanks again.

You might consider checking out the Portraits page of the Downloads section if you'd like a wider selection. (And I do mean a staggeringly wide selection )

Welcome to Avlis

On the subject of IC talking, there are several available Channels for this. These are accessed by clicking on the bottom left-hand corner of the screen (in the Game), where it usually says Talk. This provides a menu of other choices. However, not all of these can be used.

Talk = normal IC speech

Party = Talk within a small group of players of whom you are a member. This must not be used for IC information, as that is like using a walkie-talkie - which do not exist on Avlis. Also, you should not use this very much, if at all, as ALL DMs will see this - which they find annoying. You do not want to annoy a DM

Whisper = To talk quietly. Only heard by those very close to you.

Shout = Disabled for Players. Can only be used by DMs.

DM = To speak to a DM, i.e. to call for help. You do not see what is typed here, even if you type it. However, all DMs see this (when they are online on that server). If you do not get a reply, either there are no DMs online or they are busy at the moment. Usually, we will reply, even if just to say we are busy or to ask you to wait.

Hope that helps - I think the rest of your questions have been answered.

Enjoy yourself - Welcome again

Dont make a character with no name tag or with " marks
you wont be able to get tells. or if theres 3 people with no name and you need to find the one you are looking for it can be troublesome.

Also, DMs tend to either ignore them, or pay them special attention - either of which can be hazardous to your health

Thanks for the help everyone!

I've gotten my character, Caviel, together, and I've been exploring Le'Or. The suggestion of Dagath was very helpful. I had to change my character a little bit, but it allowed me to play the alignment I wanted and still be a druid.

Thanks again!

Have the same issue, and although I am sure that the portrait packs has some beauties too (still downloading them), are the portraits of the CEP included there too? Or are those only for NPC's (because normally when playing a CEP mod there are also CEP portraits for players available).

Just asking.:)
